Snowy is an adult female moose, named by a local in town for her white-colored facial markings, that decided to take up residence right outside of the town of Silverton for the summer. In the early morning she is often out foraging in the willows along the river. Moose typically spend several hours eating in the early morning before bedding down to chew their cud. While some moose descend to lower elevations for the winter, others remain in the high mountain forests and valleys over the winter. Due to the scarcity of food, however, they are rarely seen as they don’t move around a lot to conserve energy. With the vegetation finally greening up in the late spring up in the high mountains, moose spend many hours a day eating willows and other bushes as well as occasionally kneeling down on their front legs to eat grass and other ground cover. They don’t have much fear of people and are often seen near and even in town, but they are large animals and like most animals are very protective of their young, which are born around the end of May. You don’t want to have one charge you! They get particularly agitated by dogs, and most cases of locals being chased by moose involved a dog.
